College can be an extremely stressful time.  When you combine academics, extracurriculars, social life, and family, there is often very little time to sort out the thoughts racing in your head!  All students go through these feelings at least once in their college career, but there is a group of people who experience these feelings and more: student-athletes.  As a student-athlete, you have to cope with all of the above stressors, as well as keep up with the daily requirements of being a college athlete.

As a rising senior student-athlete, I can personally say that my days begin at the crack of dawn and often don’t end until very late at night.  Here is a glimpse into a typical day of the student-athlete life:

5:30 a.m.: Alarm goes off

6:00 a.m.: Arrive at gym for morning fitness session

6:30–7:30 a.m.: Morning fitness/conditioning session

8:00 a.m: Breakfast

9:00 a.m–12:00 p.m.: Classes

12:00 p.m.: Lunch

1:00–3:00 p.m.: Classes

3:00–4:00 p.m.: Library, working on assignments

4:30–6:30 p.m.: Afternoon training session

7:00 p.m.: Dinner

8:00–11:00 p.m.: Library, working on assignments/homework

11:30 p.m.: Bed

This schedule will vary throughout the week, and based on which season is going on (competitive season vs. off-season), but for most student-athletes, this is what a typical day looks like.  Although there is very little downtime, there are many perks that come with being a student-athlete (outside of the gear!).  Playing a sport in college allows an individual to develop incredible time management and organizational skills, which include planning out your schedule weeks in advance, working around your academic schedule, and learning to map out college in general.

As a freshman, it can be very overwhelming trying to fit everything into a tight schedule, but having set schedules as a student athlete allows you to develop those time management skills a little quicker, as well as gain the tools necessary to be a leader and an influential member of your institution.  Student athletes must abide by strict NCAA rules and regulations on a year round basis, and are constantly setting a prime example of how to represent your school with pride.  They are often members of many other clubs on campus, and remain actively involved outside of their sport and their schoolwork.  There are times it gets very difficult, but during those times, it’s important to remember why you do what you do: for the love of your sport!
