When it comes to my favorite days of the year, the Academy Awards is right up there alongside Christmas, my birthday, and the day after Valentine’s.  Yes, the Oscars are a time to recognize and commemorate outstanding achievements in acting and filmmaking, but we’d all be lying if we said we weren’t just as excited (and probably more so) to see what our favorite stars don on the red carpet.  After all, what are the Oscars if not a glorified photo shoot for Hollywood’s most fashionable?  While the controversial events of the 88th Academy Awards are not behind us (like this unnecessary joke), let’s take a minute to relive the best moments from the red carpet and celebrate the wonderful women who remind us of what a true leading lady looks like inside and out.

Chrissy Teigen

Ok, while Chrissy and hubby John Legend won for cutest red carpet couple and parents-to-be, Chrissy easily shines on her own in a Marchesa dress that shows off her baby bump in possibly the most chic way ever.

Rooney Mara

Though she didn’t win Best Supporting Actress for her role in Carol, Ms. Mara stunned on the red carpet in a beautiful white lace Givenchy dress with a sexy down-the-middle slit and diamond cutout.  Swoon.

Lady Gaga

Let me list the reasons I love Lady Gaga.  Not only did she shake up the red carpet in a part-dress, part-pantsuit masterpiece (designed by Brandon Maxwell), she brought survivors of sexual assault to center stage as she delivered a powerful rendition of her Oscar-nominated song ‘ ’Til It Happens to You’ from the documentary The Hunting GroundA sexual assault survivor herself, Lady Gaga reminds us how important it is that the voices of rape survivors be heard.  It’s on us to make college campuses (and everywhere else) safe.

Daisy Ridley

Even Hollywood newcomer and breakout Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley knows you can never go wrong with an embroidered Chanel Haute Couture number, especially one that hits at the perfect length to show off one’s custom Christian Louboutin peep toes.

Cate Blanchett

As the official spokesperson for Giorgio Armani’s Si Fragrance it makes sense that Cate regularly graces the red carpet in dazzling Armani gowns, but this sea foam green, flower-adorned Armani Prive dress might just top the rest.

Alicia Vikander

Belle, is that you?  Alicia may have channeled the Disney princess for her big night in a pale yellow, custom Louis Vuitton gown, and for good reason too—her win for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Danish Girl was nothing short of a princess moment.

Mindy Kaling

Inside Out might have scored a win for Best Animated Feature, but Mindy killed it on the red carpet (and off) in an unexpectedly charming, off-the-shoulder Elizabeth Kennedy dress, complete with its own flowing blue cape.

Brie Larson

What better way to accept your first Oscar for Best Leading Actress than in a custom lapis blue silk organza Gucci gown with a crystal and pearl embroidered belt?  The Room actress made sure to hug her pint-sized costar Jacob Tremblay before walking on stage, a moment which melted the hearts of viewers everywhere.

Priyanka Chopra

This Quantico star wowed the crowds on her first Oscars red carpet in an angelic, white silk tulle Zuhair Murad strapless gown.  A dazzling assortment of diamond jewelry and a simple, chic low ponytail tied the whole look together for the former Miss World.

Oscar.9

Saoirse Ronan

While she didn’t end the night with an Oscar, Best Leading Actress nominee Saoirse sparkled on the red carpet in a sexy, custom emerald Calvin Klein Collection gown worn in honor of her home country, Ireland.  Along with a pair of mismatched earrings (one pearl, one emerald), stunning smoky eye and nude lips, Saoirse solidified her status as a red carpet goddess.
