I am a chronic multitasker.  It’s actually quite ridiculous. I can’t even sit and watch television because I constantly feel the need to be “doing.” Watching TV for me includes knitting, stretching and doing sit-ups, responding to emails, and drinking a cup of coffee, in addition to watching the show itself. Blame it on ADD or on my go-getter personality, but as I said, I am a multitasker through and through (even as I am writing this blog post I have music playing, I’m enjoying an iced green tea, and I’m having a conversation with my identical twin sister, Claire).  Yeah, it’s gotten bad… But I think when it boils down to it, we as women have to be multitaskers. Somewhere along the way, we were trained in the fine art of applying eyeliner while driving to work. We are skilled at curling our hair while we talk on the phone and magically put breakfast on the table.  We are planning parties while on conference calls, walking our dogs while warming up for auditions, and volunteering at local charities while simultaneously remaining on call for work. When life so ardently requires us girls to be multitaskers, shouldn’t we demand the same from our cosmetics?

Whether you are a makeup maniac or a minimalist, when considering the topic of beauty, cosmetic products are sure to come into play. With the exit of 2013, many trends in the world of makeup went by the wayside (here’s looking at you, Rihanna’s blue lipstick and Miley’s bleached brows). As we move forward into 2014, along with softer hues, retro hairstyles, and more of a natural look, multitasking makeup is on trend, and I have to say, I don’t hate it.

As a child, I always wanted to grow up and be a ballerina (I don’t think I could be a bigger cliché if I tried). This dream led to dance class, which inevitably led to recitals and countless performances of The Nutcracker, which in turn led to my first tube of lipstick. I remember spending hours in front of dressing room mirrors, watching senior company dancers apply foundation, false eyelashes, eyeliner and shadow, and of course, glitter on top of glitter, to ensure they would stand out on stage. I remember watching some girls use blush as lip color, rosebud salve as both a moisturizer and a healing agent for tired ankles and blisters, and eyeliner as lip liner (yeah, that one didn’t go very well). So, while the idea of multipurpose makeup or makeup multitasking is not something new to me, the fact that it’s now a hot beauty trend is causing me to revisit this dressing room ritual with new interest.

In 2014, we can look out for a spike in the production of multipurpose makeup, thanks to new innovations and research, specifically surrounding vibrantly colored products.  Top of the line companies such as Nars, Benefit, Sephora, Bobbi Brown and Philosophy are continuing to jump on board this trend by marketing multitaskers such as rouge specifically designed for both lips and cheeks, moisturizers that not only rejuvenate skin but also include SPF, concealers that serve as foundation and as an anti-inflammatory, and bronzer that doubles as a shimmery eye shadow. Nail polish is being infused with perfume and blush is being produced with the endorsement that it also serves as a pore minimizer.

Whether you believe this trend is too good to be true or too ridiculous to adhere to, with all its seemingly extravagant bells and whistles (perfume-infused nail polish sounds a bit posh for me), one thing is undeniable - with the upswing of this beauty trend, consumers get the bang for their buck. Naturally, some products are sure to work better than others, but as the year soldiers on, so will the upswing in this beauty trend and in the production of multitaskers, especially when it comes to color cosmetics. Why settle for products that only accomplish one task, when you are always juggling so many? So, the inherent multitasker within all of us can rejoice, for this up and coming beauty trend is sure to appease everyone, from the makeup maniac to the makeup minimalist!
