It Girl Status

Who is The Lovely It Girl?

The Lovely It Girl is the bold, beautiful, brilliant woman you were born to be.  She wants it all, does it all and has it all, all on her own terms.  She knows her ‘It’ (her unique intrinsic value) and owns it to make her mark on the world.

I’ve always been inspired by this quote by Diane Von Furstenberg: ‘I didn’t always know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the woman I wanted to be.’  Becoming a Lovely It Girl is all about embracing who you are and letting go of who you think you should be.

How has your definition of It Girl changed?

Growing up I fell prey to what I now like to call the It Girl Illusion - the idea that if you land the dream job, the dream apartment, and the dream guy you will ‘have it all’ and live happily ever after.  After graduating college (where I landed my dream guy), I moved into my dream apartment and landed my dream job at a world-renowned publishing company in New York.  On the outside I ‘had it all’ but on the inside something was clearly missing.

The sparkle of my It Girl life soon faded and I was left feeling disillusioned and lost.  At first I was convinced there was something wrong with me.  I felt selfish for wanting something more when I already ‘had it all.’  But after I took a step back to ask myself what having it all meant to me I realized that I didn’t want a life that looked perfect on the outside, I wanted a life that felt perfect on the inside.  What I truly wanted was a life I loved from the inside out filled with passion, purpose and prowess.

I began to re-evaluate my It Girl role models, and was so inspired by the women entrepreneurs I met at networking events in New York who, to me, truly ‘had it all’ - lives they loved from the inside out, filled will passion, purpose and prowess. I became passionate about redefining the modern It Girl from a girl who ‘has it all’ to the girl who wants it all, does it all, and has it all, all on her own terms.

How can bSmart members define our ‘It?’

In order to create an authentic personal brand, you have to know and own your ‘It.’  Your ‘It’ is your unique intrinsic value that only you have to offer the world.  It’s the intersection of your passions, your purpose and your prowess - what you love to do, how you love to help others (how you want to change the world), and where you have expertise and experience from your story.

Why is it important to create a personal brand?

Whether you want to launch your own business or land your dream job, your personal brand empowers you to make a living doing what you love and make your mark on the world.  The truth is that whether or not you are intentionally cultivating your personal brand, you already have one!  By mindfully and strategically establishing your brand you will position yourself as an influencer and cultivate a community of personal brand cheerleaders (your Clique) who will support your mission and spark your movement.

What is the first step in creating our personal brand strategy?

The purpose of your personal brand strategy is to clarify your brand identity, communicate your brand message, and connect with your Clique of personal brand cheerleaders online and offline through content marketing, social media marketing and strategic partnerships.

The first step in creating your personal brand strategy is to clarify your ‘It.’

Make a list of your passions (what you love to do), your purpose (how you love to serve others), and your prowess (what you’re naturally gifted at or where you have experience or education).  Now it’s time to get creative!  How can you combine your passions, purpose and prowess to create a unique niche that you can own and that will be the heart of your brand?

How does brand definition play a role in developing our business and professional reputation?

Your business or blog should be an extension of your personal brand, not the other way around.  Many entrepreneurs invest lots of money into their brand design (website, logo, business cards, etc.) before they are clear on their personal brand strategy.  Your message, mission, values and voice are the foundation of your personal brand and will serve as a blueprint for your brand design.

What role does social media and blogging play in expressing our brand?

The role of social media and blogging is to establish your personal brand online by consistently communicating your message and connecting with your Clique through valuable and shareable content.  Creating and curating content online establishes your personal brand voice, which puts the ‘personal’ in your personal brand and is the key to cultivating a lasting relationship with your Clique.

What have been your biggest lessons learned building your own ‘It?’

Always stay true to your brand.  When growing your personal brand online, it can be so tempting to compare yourself to other It Girls who appear to have more success than you.  Comparison is super self-destructive, like personal brand poison, so when you find your mind venturing down that dangerous path, remember that no one can be you better than YOU.  The secret to manifesting your ‘have it all’ vision is to own your ‘It’ and commit to showing up as your best self each and every day.
