Now that we’ve had time to reflect on 2013, it’s time to start thinking about the important things in our future. When I say ‘future,’ I of course mean spring style. When I say ‘important things,’ I of course, mean the fashion must-haves for how to dress well this season.

Most of us are still bundling up in our Uggs and chunky knits as we shiver through the Polar Vortex, which has even brought a layer of frost to the deep south. My style advice is to use your snow days to get fit, as the temperatures will soon rise and before you know it and you’ll be replacing your cashmere layers with revealing crop-tops (which were spotted on the runways at New York Fashion Week!).

While it certainly isn’t in most of our 2014 budgets to fill our closets with the latest spring style fashion trends (unless you’re a cast member on The Rich Kids of Beverly Hills), there are a few pieces you should consider adding to your wardrobe in order not to miss the bus for how to dress well his spring.

1. Orange Crush

Orange is, indeed, the new black. Whether we‘re talking lipsticks or ball gowns, designers have chosen various shades of the citrus color to brighten up their collections. My style advice is to invest in a coral lip balm and one statement persimmon piece like a lightweight jacket or even an everyday tote.

2. Flower Power

I‘m not talking about the peace signs and tie-dye of the 60’s. This spring is sure to be blooming with beautiful floral prints. Designers like Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, and Etro had various interpretations of this trend. Whether you choose an embroidered frock a la Michael Kors Spring 2014 or a garden print silk blouse to update last year’s denim, jump on the pretty petal bandwagon.

3. Show Me Your Midriff

Be sure to do your bicycle crunches and planks in preparation for one of the hottest spring style trends. This is not your daughter’s crop-top, friends. This season, the focus is less on the bellybutton and more on the ribcage, as designers at New York Fashion Week debuted a mature version of the 80’s iconic look. Balenciaga did it with an A-line high-waisted matching skirt, while T. by Alexander Wang offered a more body-conscious version. My style advice is to pair the look with everything (full skirts, pencil skirts, and high-waisted flares - my personal favorite), but one thing is certain - start your ab work now to take part in this fashion trend.

4. Used Goods

Denim made its way to the runway more than a couple of times during New York Fashion Week. The theme evoked 90s grunge with a polished finish. This trend is quite versatile as it can be dressed down for a stylish casual Sunday ensemble or paired with a sexy stiletto for Saturday night approved attire. My style advice is to DIY with an old pair of jeans and scissors, or you can just purchase a pair. These distressed flares from Alice and Olivia’s Spring 2014 collection fit the bill.

5. Shine On

Perhaps I’m revealing my age if I say that spring 2014’s iridescent fashion trend is sending me on a trip down memory lane to a time when my Trapper Keeper binder was covered in oily stickers by Lisa Frank. Whether you too are reminded of the 90s, or you have no clue who Lisa Frank is (or what in the world a Trapper Keeper is), if you’re interested in keeping up with the current spring style, you should become familiar with the one trend that took over the runways in Paris. Designers from Armani to Dior displayed iridescent designs on dresses, jackets, handbags, and even sneakers. If a Marc Jacobs iridescent jacket is too much for you to handle, try clutching it instead, with a shiny accessory like this très chic hand bag.

From florals to crop tops, spring fashion has landed in stores. So while you may still be shoveling your way out of the snow, there is sunlight at the end of the tunnel! Happy spring 2014 shopping!!
