I was never a morning person. College made it easy not to be, but this year had to be different.  I had earned an editorial position on my university paper and an internship, all while balancing a full course load and friends.  I was finding myself exhausted, rushed, and stressed when I woke up in the morning.  I knew it was time for a lifestyle change.

As an avid Pinterest user, I was scrolling through my feed when I found an article about The Miracle Morning Routine for College Students: Life S.A.V.E.R.S.  The acronym stands for Silence, Affirmations, Visualization, Exercise, Reading, and Scribe.  The routine can be as long as or as short as you want it to be, as long as you incorporate all six.

I was intrigued.

I then looked into the benefits of being a morning person.  Across the board, websites, experts and bloggers all agreed that morning people are more proactive, goal oriented and feel more in control of their lives.  Moreover, morning people are more optimistic, agreeable and conscientiousness.  I also found an interesting study by Texas University from 2008 that found college students who identified themselves as ‘early birds had an average grade point average (GPA) that was a full point higher than night owls: 3.5 vs. 2.5.’

This sounded like a winning combination to me, so I decided to give it a try.  Now every week day morning, I get up 2 hours before my first class starts and begin my routine.  My meditation lasts for 1 to 2 minutes and then I get ready to go to the gym.  I work out for about an hour, come back to my apartment and then get ready for the day.  While I eat breakfast I catch up on my news, everything from The New York Times to Refinery 29 and my Instagram feed.  I then make my To-Do list for the day, week, and month which encompasses the affirmations, visualization, and scribe aspect of my Miracle Morning.  After all of this is done, I still have time to spare allowing me to relax, get coffee, or leisurely stroll to class.

Since starting, I have seen a number of differences in myself.  I have more natural energy and I am dialing down my coffee intake.  I also have time to make myself an actual breakfast that doesn't just consist of a protein bar and coffee.  Lastly, I feel more in control of everything from my school work to my responsibilities at my internship and the paper.

While it can be daunting, finding the motivation to become a morning person and practicing the Life S.A.V.E.R.S. routine is worth more to your healthy lifestyle than hitting snooze button tomorrow morning.
