Lesson 1) Know Who You Are and What You Want

Oprah's Answer:

Who Am I? I am God's child - a spiritual being having a human experience.  Because I am connected to the Source of all that is, all that is is possible, is possible for me.  That is who I am.

What do I want?  I don't just want to be successful in the world.  I don't want to just make a mark or have a legacy.  I want to fulfill the highest, truest, expression of myself as a human being.  I want to fulfill the promise that the Creator dreamed when he dreamed the cells that made up me.  You must have some kind of vision of your life.  Even if you don't know the plan, you must have a direction you choose to go.

Smart Tip:  You want to be in the driver's seat of your life, because if you're not, life will drive you.

Lesson 2) Find a Way to Serve if you want to be a leader

Oprah's Advice:

The real truth is that service and significance is that which is lasting.  Whatever your occupation, job, talent, or gift - use your knowledge and gifts in service to the world.  Look at all of the successful people in the world.  Whether they know it or not, they offer that paradigm of service - from Facebook to Jay-Z, they all offer a service.

In 1993, I decided I was not just going to be on TV, I was going to use TV as a platform for good and not be used by TV.  My decision to make that significant change in the way I operated on television, using television as a service, changed my career exponentially.  Offer service through medicine, art, or whatever it is you produce as a way of giving back to the world.  When you shift the paradigm of whatever it is you choose to do and you bring service to that success will, I promise, follow.

bSmart Tip: Service and significance equals success.

Lesson 3) Always Do the Right Thing. Always.

Be excellent - people notice.  Let excellence be your brand.  Everyone talks about building a brand.  I never even knew what that was.  When people would say you're a brand, I would say, 'No I'm just Oprah.'  What I recognize now is that my choice to, in every way, in every example, and in every experience to do the right thing and the excellent thing is what has created my brand.

Years ago I did an ad for Revlon on 'Unforgetable Women.'  What I know is that when you are excellent, you become unforgetable.  People remember you and you stand out.  Regardless of what it is - you become an unforgetable woman.  And this is what we all want.  So, doing the right thing, even when nobody knows you're doing the right thing will always bring the right thing to you.  Why?  Because for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.  Like Newton said and Celie in the Color Purple said, 'Everything you already done to me, already been done to you.'

bSmart Tip:  How do you know it's 'the right thing?'  At the end you will be rewarded with peace in knowing you did the right thing.

bSmart Questions to ask yourself:

1) What type of leader do I want to be in the world? What is my relationship to the Source of all that is God?

2) Are you serving through what you're doing?

3) Are you doing the right thing in your work and relationships?

Those three things will not only lead you to a blessed and rewarded life, but a sweet life.  So that even when the storms come (and they will) you'll know this too shall pass because you know who you are. - Oprah Winfrey
