    Hi bSmart babes!

I’m kicking of the “If you can dream it, you can do it” mentorship series!

If you could be a business owner or entrepreneur in anything, if you gave yourself permission to dream big and listen to your inner instincts, what would you be?

Now that you have your vision - list 3 attainable and specific smaller goals (e.g. designating time towards your goal every day, creating a vision board for motivation, or bringing up your idea to friends and family for support), that will help you reach your big goal

    My answer:
I have always been happiest when I am doing something creative, but feel that my creative hobbies are the first to fall to the wayside when I’m busy. One of my goals is to create a jewelry business (even if just in a small setting, like on Etsy). My 3 specific and smaller goals I need in order to achieve my large goal are:

    1. Setting aside and investing my money in higher quality material and more supplies so that I can make better jewelry and grow my business.
    2. Designating time each day dedicated to working on creating jewelry and making pieces that I am proud of, using my new materials.
    3. Creating an Etsy account to advertise and expand my business.

  • Hello, lovely people!

I am responding to Joanna's “If you can dream it, you can do it” mentorship series.

    The series goes:

If you could be a business owner or entrepreneur in anything, if you gave yourself permission to dream big and listen to your inner instincts, what would you be?

Now that you have your vision - list 3 attainable and specific smaller goals (e.g. designating time towards your goal every day, creating a vision board for motivation, or bringing up your idea to friends and family for support), that will help you reach your big goal

    My answer:
I always loved makeup and was once crazy over watching beauty youtubers. So my dream is to work in cosmetic company or become a beauty youtuber reviewing tons of new makeup products (hahah). My 3 specific and smaller goals I need in order to achieve my large goal are:

    1. Keep loving makeup and watch beauty youtube videos!
    2. Try to write makeup product reviews and study more about chemical ingredients.
    3. Search for cosmetic companies and maybe apply for them.

Now I know talking about money is taboo but I believe that transparency is so essential to personal growth and to helping others:

From the information I have read here are the top 3 things that qualify you as financially healthy:

$. 6x Your take home pay in your savings account for emergencies.
$. 20% of your income should go to your 401k
$. 1 million in your 401k by the time you retire

Once I started to break these numbers down, I started to feel like this was going to be impossible!!!!!! But after I calmed down I came up with 3 of my own financial goals.

    1. $300 to my savings account.

Now what this fund really is for is medical emergencies and unemployment. I would feel most comfortable having 1 years worth of rent saved and a little extra. I have always felt that a back up fund is essential. Life happens and credit card debt can be hard to recover from. If you read my previous post I cut out buying morning coffee and getting my nails done to be able to contribute to this fund.

This emergency fund really got me thinking about my purchases and what was actually necessary. This has helped me to make more conscious purchases and to spend my money on companies that align with my personal values.

    2. $880 to my 401k

Based on a 25 year old retiring at the age of 65) you need to contribute $880 a month into your 401k. Currently I am falling short of this number. I am less concerned with this number right now. I do want to leverage it to help keep me in a lower tax bracket ( in all honestly I don't really know what that means and it's something I'd like to have a general understanding of). Also as my salary increases over the years I do plan to make a larger percentage contribution.

    3. $500 saving for personal investment

Investing is at the top of my list for financial goals this year. Over the next 5 years based on compound interest calculations I am trying to hit 30k with an initial principal of 5k and adding 6k per year( $500 per month). This is the money I want to invest for my future. Since side hustle are tough to get in Manhattan I felt like this was a great option to make my money work for me.

This is not easy and it takes planning, hard work, and sacrifices!

What are some of your financial goals? How are you saving for them?

My next post I want to put together how I live a mostly minimalist life and the step I take to researching and deciding to make a purchase. Stay tuned!

    Hi bSmart Women!

What is a quote that inspires you, represents your values, gets you through tough times? Let’s get creative and design an image for it!
I used Canva(canva.com) to create this picture of my favorite quote by Albert Camus. It carried me through a time when I was transitioning and felt overwhelmed. For the background, I used a painting of one of my favorite artists - Claude Monet.

Feel free to use canva, any other design tools, or even hand-draw a favorite quote of yours, post it here and tag 5 other bSmart women to post their favorite quote! You can also keep it somewhere you can see (I added it to stickies on my desktop ;P ) and let it give you a little inspiration whenever you need it!

My goal is to take care of myself during this time by 1) taking care of my skin and hair, 2) eating nourishing food 3) walking a lot and going to yoga so that I can soak up this immsense happiness even while I'm in a whirlwhind of excitment and thinking and strategizing. I'll be accountable to this group and post about progress once a week- join me with your own project, big or small!

    Hi Group!

Sorry for the radio silence it’s been a crazy few months at work!

I just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing and also to talk to you about promotions.

It's October and typically reviews don't start happening until April but it's never too late to start thinking about your goals and expectations. I think the biggest lesson I have learned in the last 10 years is to be clear about what you want and to ask for it, and second to that is to go above and beyond your job expectations. Using these 2 things and a few other tricks I am going to outline for you how I was able to increase my income by 70% in 5 years!

To start I should explain my career is in fashion merchandising. I went to SUNY Cortland and received my Bachelors in Art and was fortunate that my internship turned into my full time job.

My 5 year journey started when I switched jobs. I was making an assistant's salary and with 3 years of experience and taking on many more responsibilities than was required for an assistant, I was able to negotiate an associate level salary making 5k more a year. At this assistant level job I was working 50+ sometimes 60 hours a week, there was nothing I didn't volunteer to help with. I was super organized, hit all of my deadlines and often met with my boss to ask questions about projects we were working on. I was fortunate enough to fill in as a merchandiser for outlet and offprice when someone from our team left, I will admit that sometimes it depends on the opportunities that become available to you.

Then from age 26-27, my associate level job allowed me to make overtime. We were a small division and there was a lot of work to be done so I took advantage of the opportunity and worked a minimum of 50 hours a week. I had heard from other associates that they were able to leverage their overtime when it came time for a promotion which is exactly what I did. I was making an extra 20k in OT which is more than I would have received with the usual 10% they give for a promotion. I also was feeling frustrated that after 3 years I still had not received a promotion so I took a new approach, I set up a meeting with my president and asked for a promotion. I came to the meeting with my original job description and wrote all the additional responsibilities I had after 3 years as well as new processes I implemented that helped make our team more efficient. My President was so impressed with my achievements and my ambitious attitude, and it really helped to have her on my side and fighting for my growth and best interest. In the end I received a title change to Manager and secured the additional 20k onto my base salary.

At this point in my career the fashion industry was not doing well and many people from major companies were getting laid off. It was a scary time by the time I was finally able to get a promotion I was not able to negotiate for more than my gross salary with overtime. But the plus side to this was I no longer had to work the overtime to secure the extra 20k a year and I could focus my energy on my health and work-life balance which till this point did not exist.

From 27-30 I have been increasing by the standard 3% cost of living increase which came out to be another 6k a year.

So in total over the course of 5 years from age 25-30 I negotiated 30k to that starting salary. I am now working on my next 5 year career plan and how I can double my current income and land a VP title!

bSmart has taught me so many great things. One of them is to dream bigger, which is harder than it seems and the other big thing is that you need to create your own opportunities. And my work experience made me learn that I need to speak up for my-self and be clear about my goals and expectations.

I would love to hear your experience with promotions and asking for raises!

In terms of ‘healthy living’ I have been thinking a lot lately:

People who work 9am-6pm, if you really think about it and factor in an hour commute it really equates to 8am-7pm. So how do you find time to live your best life?

I have found that a lot of advise comes from people who work from home with flexible schedules. But for people who are away from the home 55 hours a week how do you find time to do it all? And by all I mean keep up with the latest research, source ethical non-toxic budget friendly home and beauty products ( and let’s face it that alone can take hours of searching), making time to get to the health food store( I personally live in a food desert and have to walk 15 min to get to the healthy grocery store that sells organic or spend $20 on cabs), and meal prepping which depending on how many people you cook for and if you are prepping lunch and dinner can take a minimum of 3 hours.

Most of the time I feel like a failure. Like I am not doing good enough. But I have to remember my time constraints and that this can’t consume all of my free time. I still l need time to cultivate my relationships, go out on the weekend and enjoy life.

All of this brings me to the question: How can healthy living be made easier the way that unhealthy choices are so readily available ( amazon prime now, seamless, fast food, junk snacks)? From personal experience I find that It’s more than just community support and accountability, it’s apps and delivery services that caters to healthy non-toxic living.

Here are a list of my favorites

    Informational resources:
https://www.ewg.org ( they also have an app you can scan and check products)

    Please share your thoughts:

What are some of your experiences and challenges with healthy living?

What are some of your favorite apps and time saving tips?
