Hi bSmart ladies and women who are new to this community!

I wanted to share my own follow-up to "Chapter 1: The Inner Critic" from 'Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead.'

For years, my inner critic was:

    3. Ostensibly, the voice of reason.
    4. The voice of 'You aren't Ready Yet'

And to be honest, I'm still not sure if I'm being strategic or with taking additional and thorough preparations with my goals. For example, with bSmart, I didn't go out and tell the world I created an online mentorship and networking community. Instead, I've spent 5-6 years getting feedback on the technology and programs to figure out the best way to offer this to women.

In some respects, this aligns with Tara's (the author) chapter on leaping, but at times I wondered if I've held myself back. For example, should I be fundraising instead of self-funding? Should I be paying for PR and marketing?

It's hard to know whether you're being strategic or holding yourself back by requiring more preparation, more education, more crossing of t's and dotting of i's.

What do the women in this community think is an appropriate balance for leaping versus being prepared and strategic?

Are women in particular holding themselves back either from nature or nurture by being over-prepared for their goals?

What "Inner Critic" voice do you identify with the most?

    1. Harsh, rude, mean
    2. Binary
    3. Ostensible, the voice of reason.
    4. The voice of 'You aren't Ready Yet'
    5. The voice of 'You aren't good at math / negotiating / technical stuff."
    6. The voice of body-perfectionism
    7. The tape.
    8. A broken record.
    9. Irrational but persistent
    10 The one-two punch.
    11. The inner critic may take inspiration from critical people in your life.

To get the conversation started, I'm tagging Michelle Hoppe-Long Amanda Mary Bemis Anna Silverman Jessica Li Ursula Choi Diane Im Angelina Eimannsberger Amanda Sannella Gwendolyn Crafts Amanda Wowk Anne Whiting Yirou Yu Tracy Kim Jacqui Gabriella Bower Nina Wanda Schell Gonzalez Courtnie Weber Lilly Pianin

  • Hello, lovely people!

I am responding to Joanna's “If you can dream it, you can do it” mentorship series.

    The series goes:

If you could be a business owner or entrepreneur in anything, if you gave yourself permission to dream big and listen to your inner instincts, what would you be?

Now that you have your vision - list 3 attainable and specific smaller goals (e.g. designating time towards your goal every day, creating a vision board for motivation, or bringing up your idea to friends and family for support), that will help you reach your big goal

    My answer:
I always loved makeup and was once crazy over watching beauty youtubers. So my dream is to work in cosmetic company or become a beauty youtuber reviewing tons of new makeup products (hahah). My 3 specific and smaller goals I need in order to achieve my large goal are:

    1. Keep loving makeup and watch beauty youtube videos!
    2. Try to write makeup product reviews and study more about chemical ingredients.
    3. Search for cosmetic companies and maybe apply for them.

    Hi bSmart babes

Have you joined Yirou Yu's quote and image challenge? It's a fun way to share inspiration and get to know each other.

    Her instructions are:
"What is a quote that inspires you, represents your values, gets you through tough times? Let’s get creative and design an image for it!

I used Canva(canva.com) to create this picture of my favorite quote by Albert Camus. It carried me through a time when I was transitioning and felt overwhelmed. For the background, I used a painting of one of my favorite artists - Claude Monet.

Feel free to use canva, any other design tools, or even hand-draw a favorite quote of yours, post it here and tag 5 other bSmart women to post their favorite quote! You can also keep it somewhere you can see (I added it to stickies on my desktop ;P ) and let it give you a little inspiration whenever you need it!"

Here's mine - a quote by Upenn founder Benjamin Franklin about bein openminded and trying new things, with a photo of his statue on campus.

    What's yours?

    Hello bSmart babes! Happy Monday!

What are projects and goals you'd wish bSmart would support you?

Accountability and encouragement can be key factors in making progress on a goal, from a new job to skin care routine to exercise or a new skill on the resume! Comment below with a project you'd like me to hold you accountable for and I'll support you for the next month.

I'll go first-- this month is immensly stressful for me, with stress of the happiest kind: I have 3 offers for PhD programs in Comparative Literature/English (yay!!!) and will visit the campus of Upenn and UW Seattle to make up my mind. My goal is to take care of myself during this time by 1) taking care of my skin and hair, 2) eating nourishing food 3) walking a lot and going to yoga so that I can soak up this immsense happiness even while I'm in a whirlwhind of excitment and thinking and strategizing. I'll be accountable to this group and post about progress once a week- join me with your own project, big or small!

Everyone is welcome to join! Simply comment below!

Amanda Sannella Elsie Grathwohl Yirou Yu Ashley Evans Laura L. Smith India Jones Tracy Kim Sydney Taylor Annie M Roethe - let me know if you'd like to join me to offer accountability and mutual encouragement for each other!
