Last year I uttered the words "I QUIT!" to my boss. My immediate sigh of relief was beyond imagination. So why did I choose to quit a job that was at the very least paying my bills? I was tired of my work not being appreciated and the fact that my employer didn't care about the employees. It was an environment where co-workers were rewarded for gossiping and backstabbing. Needless to say, I was working in a less than empowered environment.

That experience was an eye opener for me. Now, as a female entrepreneur, my mission is to be socially conscious in all respects, to the best of my ability. The era of mindless leadership has been exhausted. Now is the time for leaders to be at the forefront of innovation, and mindful of how their actions and products affect the world and its people.

Being socially responsible in business can make all the difference in ensuring the success of a company. So I've researched, I've had exciting chats with socially conscious entrepreneurial friends, and I’ve created four tips for you to practice to be a socially conscious businesswoman:

Tip #1 Being Employee Conscious (Case Study: Facebook)

Facebook was recently ranked at the top of the Employee’s Choice Awards 2014 by glassdoor.com. Facebook is an employee conscious company, which is how they‘re able to source and maintain great staff and one of the reasons they’re the great company they are today. Just some of the perks they provide to their employees are laundry services, ping-pong as a stress reliever, free food, and gym memberships. You can Google them if you're curious to learn more of their employee perks!

bSmart tip: Treat your staff well as a female entrepreneur. The more valued they feel, the more likely they are to help you build a lasting and successful company.

Tip #2 Being Socially Conscious (Case Study: TOMS Shoes)

Based on the simple philosophy "One for One," TOMS Shoes is committed to helping a person in need with every product you purchase. They provide shoes in more than 60 countries and help restore sight in 13 countries.

bSmart tip: As a female entrepreneur, build your business around a purpose that serves others. Build your business with the consciousness to make a difference in the world!

Tip #3 Being Environmentally Conscious (Case Study: Master and Muse)

Master and Muse is a fashion-forward lifestyle brand by female entrepreneur Amber Valletta that bridges the gap between cutting-edge fashion and mindful manufacturing. Amber chooses only to work with designers who care about how their products are designed, sourced, constructed and sold.

bSmart tip: Don't cut corners by turning a blind eye to the long term effects of how your product affects people or the environment. Be a smart female entrepreneur and create vetting practices for your business from the very beginning!

Tip #4 Being “Empowerment Conscious” (Case Study: Bakery Emporium)

You may not have heard of Bakery Emporium because it's my local bakery in Oklahoma that serves gluten free treats. I spoke with the owner and her principals are remarkable. She pays her staff above minimum wage, employees eat at the bakery for free, and employees do not have to wear uniforms and or wear a name badge. Little considerate acts like these as female entrepreneurs create an empowering environment for both the staff and the customers.

bSmart tip: Create an empowering environment in your company. No one should ever leave at the end of the day feeling empty and less empowered than when they arrived. Instead they should be in a better place.

My heart is exploding with joy to share these tips because after my personal experience, I know it is so important to engage in conversations about how to be socially conscious female entrepreneurs.

I'd love to know how you’re being socially conscious as a female entrepreneur. Write in the comments section below to share your story and encourage others. I’d love to hear from you!
