Kate Platzker commented on this post about 4 years agoHello to all you superhero movie lovers! Yesterday, Marvel announced their new lineup of movies for the next 2-3 years. This announcement at ComicCon also featured the news that the first deaf character would be featured in the upcoming film, The Eternals. This character will be played by Lauren Ridloff. She is no stranger to the industry, as she was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for her work in the play, Children of a Lesser God. Her casting has followed the industry’s continued effort to show greater representation of people of diverse ethnicities and disabilities at the forefront.
Marvel’s announcement also revealed that many of the upcoming films would be directed by women. Marvel’s increased effort and commitment to show diversity in its casting (both on screen and off screen) is not recognized nearly enough. bSmart features a statistic that women represent only 9% of movie directors. Marvel’s effort shows that change in representations of women in the arts is slowly on the rise.

One of my favorite plays of all time is called The Heidi Chronicles, by playwright Wendy Wasserstein. I first read this play in a ninth grade English class, but I decided to read it again this summer.
The play takes place in a twenty year time span from 1960 to 1980. It is a coming of age story of the main character Heidi as she navigates her way through high school and adulthood. Her relationships with other characters in the play allows her to come to her own conclusions about the direction of her life, despite the societal expectations that are placed upon women at the time.
The main takeaways that I got from this play are:
Coming of age: Heidi is discovering her identity in the midst of women’s issues coming to the forefront
Life choices: Heidi doesn’t let anyone else dictate what she should be doing in her life, it is all up to her.
Faithfulness to beliefs: Heidi says, “all people deserve to fulfill their full potential,” and she doesn’t fail to listen to her own advice. She does not satisfy the societal expectations women faced at the time (she didn’t marry, adopted a child by herself, had a successful career).
By re-reading the play this summer, I realized that many of the themes present in this play parallel with the mentorship content such as purpose, vision, and courage. Part of the mission of bSmart is to create more women leaders. In the play, Heidi changes the definition of what a woman should be. She sticks to her own beliefs and fulfills her own passions. I think I could definitely use some of this character’s drive!

Meagan Hooper commented on this post about 4 years agoI posted this as a response to a bSmart post asking about what my favorite college class was. This past year I took a communications class that was called Gendered Media Literacy, which focused on how the media affects every aspect of our lives (culture, politics, social issues, ideologies/beliefs). More specifically, we explored how media shapes our ideas of gender. The media is a platform that can reinforce or challenge gender stereotypes.
One article we read was based on the recent scandal with R. Kelly. During a primetime interview with CBS correspondent, Gayle King, R.Kelly lost his temper due to his frustrations regarding his case. An image was captured that showed R. Kelly yelling because of his frustration with his character’s portrayal in the midst of the scandal, while Gayle King remained calm. Our class spoke about how this image represents stereotypical gender norms, and how they are constantly perpetuated today in the media. This ties directly with why bSmart is so important, as the media consistently portrays women and associates them with the stereotypes that have been culturally maintained within our society. This is why the media is almost cyclical in nature, as the ideas shown and spread in the media can shape how we view certain things.

Born in Jerusalem, Israel, Portman continued her Israeli education attending the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She graduated with honors from Harvard in 2003 and was noted to have said ‘I’m going to college. I don’t care if it ruined my career. I’d rather be smart than a movie star.’

Today’s ‘Woman Who Inspires Us’ is Angie Thomas, the author of the YA sensation ‘The Hate You Give’ about a young black girl who witnesses the death of her friend. Angie is ambitious and through her storytelling represents a young black woman affected by violence and marginalization. Angie Thomas was born, raised, and lives in Jackson, Mississippi. She is a former teen rapper and now holds a BFA in Creative Writing from Belhaven University and an unofficial degree in Hip Hop.
An inaugural winner of the Walter Dean Myers Grant 2015, awarded by We Need Diverse Books, her debut novel, ‘The Hate U Give,’ is a #1 New York Times Best Seller. Film rights have been sold and Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg is expected to star in it.

Meagan Hooper reacted to this post about 6 years agoAs per today’s core value, mindfulness, we’re recommending Kate Hudson’s book Pretty Happy, in which she gives advice on how to best take care of ourselves and our bodies. Her book is based on the insight that our bodies and minds are constantly changing, and therefore our care routines need to constantly evolve, too,. Kate says, ‘When you understand yourself and connect to how you can become body smart, you realize pretty quickly that the perfect, the ideal is not the goal. Instead, the goal is feeling good in your body. That’s what leads to confidence, to feeling and looking fit, and being pretty happy.’ Check out many other bits of advice and inspiration in the book!

Only two women have ever worked as full-time weekday solo anchors of a network nightly newscast and no women have had the role since 2014, reported Vogue. Want to voice your support for the Women’s Media Center initiative?
