Pains me to say it, but it's totally different in my industry (fashion). Honestly, in fashion, half of getting and keeping the job is looking the part—the industry is all about external beauty, after all. (Recently laid off Lucinda Chambers recently elaborated on this in a juicy, revealing interview) but instead of being upset that our worth comes from our looks, it's backwards: we pride ourselves on—or prioritize—looking the best. Looking good is as important as doing a good job, i.e. we're not humiliated by being objectified by our looks: that's exactly what we aim for. (Did anyone ever also read that interview about how a girl got a job at Vogue because she spent thousands on her outfit, whereas before was rejected because she wasn't wearing any labels?) I ask people like me in my industry: how do we make sure we stay *focused* on inner beauty (which outer beauty should bring to light but not overpower) while still obsessing over fashion and adornment? What does it mean to be pretty and how does it impact our communication with others? Our girl Janet Mock published a piece about beauty and the privilege that comes with it in Allure.

Something I found especially interesting is this: 'As someone deemed pretty, I have experienced people looking at me but not really listening. I have often gotten the sense that if I serve a look that I am often reduced as someone who cannot contribute anything beyond my beauty. I have been on job interviews...

Hi you wonderful ladies! After a semester abroad in Sydney, Australia and a quick summer break in Hawaii, I'm back in NYC and looking for paid internships/jobs for the summer (communication, marketing, office assistant). It is proving harder than I thought... any suggestions?

bSmart Ladies trying to begin a workout regiment, this is for you! Fitness will open doors for a new, healthier, happier chapter in your lives!

    1. ASSESS YOUR GOALS.
Everyone has different intentions when it comes to exercise. Planning to lose weight? Run a marathon? Just doing it for your own pleasure? Figure out what exactly you are trying to achieve.

    2. WRITE IT DOWN!
Grab a piece of paper and jot down the days and times of the week that you can squeeze in a workout and WHAT EXACTLY you have the time to do. Obviously it is subject to change, but I have learned that writing down your goals and visualizing how you are going to achieve them will help the process immensely.

    3. ROUTINE.
Once you figure out what days of the week you can take on your fitness plan, make a routine! For example, (x) times a week I will workout at the gym, (x) times a week I will go running in the park and (x) times a week I will find a Zumba class/Yoga class to take with friends. It is proven once you start doing something for thirty days it becomes habit. Stay true to your plan for thirty days and see what happens!

    4. WORK IN YOUR WORKOUT!
Watching t.v. or have a couple minutes in between your daily routine? Do a couple squats while you watch your favorite reality show. Hold a plank while you wait for your shower to heat up. TRUST ME! IT'LL ADD UP.

    5. PACE YOURSELF.
REMEMBER just because you over exert yourself one day does not mean you are going to wake up the next day with a tight six pack. Results and fitness as a whole takes time and patience. Keep in mind this is a long term commitment not a short term fix.

    6. TRY IT OUT!
Is your town recreational center having a Zumba class? Is the local dance studio holding an adult dance class? Always wanted to try hot yoga? Be on the hunt for different classes and ideas that will incorporate some fun into your workout regiment. Do not be nervous to try something new! You only fail if you do not try

    7. ALLOW YOURSELF TO REST!!
Yes, some of us have caffeine running through our veins and have very large fitness goals that require the gym seven days a week. HOWEVER, this is a little unrealistic and a lot of us do not have the time or energy to do so. REST IS VITAL. You need to recharge for the next time you decide to exercise. Not only your muscles but your mind. If exercising becomes a chore you will quit before you even start!

If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me! I am always happy to help!

Happy Weekend Everyone!! I am sure everyone will be out n' about this weekend so I wanted to share with you ladies the dangers of sleeping in your makeup after a long night out!

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH OUR SKIN WHEN STALE MAKEUP LAYS ON IT FOR EXCESSIVE HOURS?

    1. Your skin will either a. dry out (like me) or b. produce excessive oil because of the foundation embedding itself in your pores. Your pores WILL clog and this will lead to an epic break out.
*For dry skin ladies... In this situation the left over makeup residue is creating a barrier that prevents vital products (like your moisturizer) from penetrating the skin's surface. Which leads to even drier, EVEN flakier skin and is incredibly hard to regulate it's moisture again.

    2. Your eye lashes will become brittle and can break and fall off more easily. Your eye lashes do not grow back as fast or as full so be EXTRA mindful of these beauties!

    3. You will more easily form spots and your acne scars can even be enhanced. The dryness your leftover makeup creates will NOT only show up in cracked looking skin BUT in dark spots.

A product my family has used for years and years is Neutrogena's Oil Free Makeup Remover. My skin is very sensitive so I have to be careful of what I put on my face on a daily basis. I can honestly say I have never had an issue with this product because it is oil free it does not clog your pores like other makeup removers.

One more trick I believe you will find MOST interesting!!.. The IMPORTANCE of using cotton balls instead of a towel when removing your makeup. Towels are too rough on the skin, especially the eye area. The skin on your face is more gentle then the skin on your body. You must treat it that way. Towels will tug and pull at your skin where as cotton balls do the job without any tragic aftermath.

I have come up with some ways to remember makeup removal!

    1. Tell yourself before you leave the house you will at least ATTEMPT to take off your makeup when the night is through. Have your t-shirt and shorts ready to change in on your bed with your makeup remover and cotton balls right on top.
    2. If you are going out ask your friends before you leave to remind you OR BETTER YET JOIN YOU! Make a small pact that you all promise to remove your makeup at the end of the night. GROUP MAKEUP REMOVAL! (How fun does that sound?!)
    3. Set an Alarm. Whatever time you will be returning home set an alarm labeled "TAKE MAKEUP OFF OR HAVE PREMATURE WRINKLES." We perk up when it comes time to waking up for the gym, school and work.. why not our beauty regiment?

BOTTOM LINE.. With the world we live in today, there are so many other factors between pollution, hormones and alcohol/processed foods we consume that ruin our skin from the inside out. Do not let some leftover lipstick and mascara be the demise of your BEAUTIFUL FACE!! You owe your face respect and love!

I learned today that I passed my online summer class with a B! This is awesome to me because I was balancing the class with my internship, work, and summer events. So, to pass with a high B feels so great, and I'm relieved to have it done. ‏ — feeling happy

If you're looking for a show that’s got a powerful cast of females look no further than ‘Glow’ now streaming on Netflix! The cast is a beautiful myriad of women representing a spectrum of sizes and colors, which isn't something we get to see everyday in entertainment. What's also amazing about the show is seeing how this diverse group of women came together as a community to support and empower each other. Curl up on the couch with your best gal pal and a glass of rosé and enjoy!!
