Growing up, the number one piece of street-smart advice I repeatedly received from my parents was 'never walk alone.'  Now a freshman in college at St Louis University in the heart of the city, I realize I need to heed this advice now more than ever.  Whether I’m leaving the library after a late night of studying or walking home from a night on the town, I'm cognizant that I should never walk alone.  However, sometimes I’m the only one left at the library at three in the morning or the only one that wants to leave the party - so then what?  Insert the Companion app.

Designed by five students at the University of Michigan, the Companion app is a way of having a make-shift friend, or 'companion,' virtually walk you home.  The app features a map with a pin for you to enter your final destination so that you can send to your contacts of choice who are automatically synched when the app is downloaded.  Your contacts can then follow your progress on the walk to your final destination.  In addition, the app includes an ‘I’m nervous’ button and a ‘call 911’ button.  When pressed, the app alerts campus safety and the local police force closest to your location.  If you begin to run or your headphones are ripped out of the phone, the app detects that as well and can alert the police.

I would absolutely recommend downloading the Companion app to anyone who walks home at night or travels alone.  While having a physical human to walk you home is preferable, a virtual companion is certainly the next best thing.
